Virginia Sea Grant's New Headquarters
at the Virginia Institute of Marine Science
The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) has designated the College of William and Mary (W&M) as the Institutional Sea Grant Program for the Commonwealth of Virginia. The program is now located at the Virginia Institute of Marine Science (VIMS). W&M President Gene Nichol commented "VIMS is uniquely positioned to push the boundries on research and coastal issues and opportunities that affect the Commonwealth and the Chesapeake Bay." Virginia Sea Grant Welcomes New Director
We are pleased to announce that Troy Hartley will join VIMS on September 1, 2008 as the Director of the Virginia Sea Grant Program (subject to approval by the College's Board of Visitors in April). Troy has a multi-disciplinary academic background with a Ph.D. in natural resources and environmental policy from the University of Michigan, an M.A. from George Mason University in environmental dispute resolution and a B.S. from the University of Vermont in zoology. He is presently employed as a Research Associate Professor at the University of New Hampshire.
His research has focused on policy and management of coastal, fisheries and water resources and in particular on collaborative research, regional governance networks, public communication, and the science-to-management process. He also serves as the Associate Director of the Northeast Consortium which encourages and funds cooperative research among commercial fishermen, scientists and managers on a wide range of fisheries and marine issues in the Gulf of Maine and Georges Bank.
Troy possesses a unique mix of skills, experience and expertise that makes him exceptionally well suited for the needs of the Virginia Sea Grant Program and VIMS.
Fly Fishers of Virginia Taylor Turner Conservation Award
presented to Jon Lucy
Named after a former FFV member Taylor F. Turner, Jr., who was known for his work in fishery conservation areas, the Taylor award was presented "for conservation of natural resources and improvement of sport fishing opportunities in Virginia." Jon Lucy, Virginia Sea Grant Marine Advisory Specialist, received the award at the February meeting of the Virginia Fly Fishers. Jon has worked with the Virginia Game Fish Tagging Program since 1995.
