NOAA VENTS Program
Research program investigating impacts of submarine volcanoes and hydrothermal venting on the global ocean. Research focuses on acoustic monitoring of earthquake and volcano activity, vent chemistry, and vent fluid transport. Research sites located in northeastern Pacific, western Pacific, eastern Pacific and northern Atlantic and include Mariana Arc, Axial Volcano, Gorda Ridge, and East Pacific Rise.
Grade Level: High school

Ocean AdVENTure
Take this virtual tour of hydrothermal vents to learn the basics about vents, how they are studied, the associated biology and geology, and consider the ethics about vent mining. This highly interactive site also has a forum for discussion, glossary, and classroom learning activities. A certificate of achievement is available for download once students successfully navigate the sight and become vent experts! Site also features an online quiz.
Grade Level: Middle school, High school

NOVA Online: Into the Abyss
Follow a deep sea mission to recover the top of a black smoker and learn about hydrothermal vent communities and the technology that lets us observe them. Site features background information on the vessels, the mission, and the crew, as well as journal entries, ask an expert, and an abundance of information on the habitat. Also features links to additional resources including websites, books, video, and more.
Grade Level: Middle school, High school

Ridge 2000
Website of Ridge 2000, a long-term program of scientific research on mid-ocean ridges and other tectonic spreading centers. This extensive website offers information for educators, scientists, students, and the general public. Each section contains background material, the latest news and information, and countless images. Also includes information on student competitions, teacher workshops, lessons and activities, career guide, upcoming expeditions, quizzes, games, demonstrations, and much more.

American Museum of Natural History Expeditions: Black Smokers
Chronicles of an expedition to collect a black smoker sulfide chimney from the Juan de Fuca Ridge off the Washington-Oregon coast. Explains what black smokers are, where they occur, and their importance. Provides brief descriptions of vent-associated organisms and the vessels and submersibles. Includes: 3 classroom activities focused on the technology and engineering of ocean exploration; expedition journals; Flash illustration of black smoker formation; interactive game; and crossword puzzle.
Grade Level: Middle school, High school

JASON Learning
The JASON Project connects students with scientists and researchers in real- and near-real time, virtually and physically, to provide mentored, authentic, enriching science learning experiences. Follow the Curriculum link for a wealth of online and print resources (fees and purchase prices apply), including curricula, videos, games, tools, and community. Like NASA's Mission Control Center, the Jason Mission Center (JMC) is your hub for exploration. Learn about powerful storms, watch a video about sharks, see if you can design a thrilling roller coaster and tell others about it in the message boards. You will even be able to ask JASON researchers questions on the JMC!
